Horror movies saved me. Intuitively, in the depths of working through my deepest trauma, I returned to my adolescent love of horror for an escape. And it became for me, a sort of immersion therapy. A tool to experience the fear by choice, and in a way I could control. I was soothed by the fact that movies always have an ending, and the common horror trope of “the final girl” features our hero (a female who has fought and outsmarted long enough to escape the monster), and if she can make it, perhaps I can, too.
Bringing horror movie imagery into my artwork is an opportunity to showcase the intensity of human emotion through color, expression, and light. They remind me to pay as much attention to what is hidden, as I do to what can be seen and felt.
